I worked in the city before I had my eldest son Noah. Right near where I worked there was a huge Tower Records that sold the most desirable things for foreign people in Japan - magazines in ENGLISH.
I bought several copies of Martha Stewart BABY while I was pregnant and just drooled over the beautiful pictures, pondered the wonderful ideas and stowed away inspiration for later. I have been carefully keeping those magazines for THIRTEEN years!
This article about a mom who started her own business from her kitchen table is the reason. In all honesty it was the impetus for starting my business Mee a Bee (where I design children's bags). In my mind's eye the woman (Elizabeth Beer of Hoyt & Bond) is dressed in a white linen suit (after all the ultimate super-mum can take care of two kids and run a design business in ANYTHING white, right???).
In my imagination I've also embellished her life and it's looks something like Meg Ryan in "You've Got Mail", happily running her dream bookstore, before the big bad mega-store opened "just around the corner". She knows all her customers by name, she skips to work, stopping to buy flowers on the way, she has the world's best employees, who are also her best friends. It's movie perfect! Oh and and in my imagination I am the Meg Ryan / Elizabeth Beer character.
Having a vision for your business is so important. Although I have expanded my vision this past year, for seven years running Mee a Bee & Chatty Cafe allowed me to play out that dream. I've never told anyone before that this was my fantasy life.

Is there someone you admire in the field you work in? Not to copy but to aspire to her way of living and working harmoniously? I think this mama is doing a super job and I admire everything she has accomplished as well as her honesty when things are not as easy as they look: Whitney English.
